Non-slip shoes for seniors need more than good grip alone.
Three more design details, heel height, collar height and sole traction, consistently show up in fall-prevention research alongside fit and fixation. Here's what the evidence says about each.
Keep the heel low
Heel height changes how weight moves through the foot and shifts the body's centre of mass.
A study comparing 1cm, 3cm and 5cm heels found that the lower heels produced noticeably better gait stability.
Most footwear guidelines for older adults now recommend a heel height of 4cm or under to protect balance.
A higher collar improves ankle stability
The collar is the part of the shoe that wraps around the ankle.
Studies comparing open-heel shoes to closed, high-collar designs found the high-collar shoes improved walking speed, stride length and step time, and wearers rated them as more comfortable and stable.
A higher collar appears to support the ankle joint directly and improve the body's sense of foot position, which helps with balance.
Traction matters more as soles wear down
Slipping happens when the friction between the sole and the floor can't keep up with the forces of walking.
Tread pattern helps channel away moisture and debris to maintain grip.
Wear matters too. One study found 90% of older adults' shoes showed sole wear, and worn soles measurably reduce available traction.
Checking tread depth every few months is a simple habit that costs nothing.
Sole and insole hardness: firmer isn't always better
Firmer soles and insoles have shown some benefit for postural stability, particularly for balance with eyes closed.
But comfort matters too. Very hard soles increased plantar pressure without improving comfort scores in one study, and some older adults reported discomfort standing on hard insoles for long periods.
The best result comes from a sole structured enough for support but not punishing to stand on all day.

None of these features work in isolation. A low heel on a soft, worn-out sole won't do much good, and neither will a high collar on a shoe that's slipping off the heel.
Fall-prevention footwear comes down to getting several small details right at once: heel height, collar support, tread and just enough sole structure.
